The latest, greatest version of Picade includes modifications to the case to accommodate a powerful Raspberry Pi 5 plus Active Cooler—there's even room for an NVMe Base, if you want to add super-fast solid-state storage. Pimoroni also refreshed the artwork and updated the online assembly guide to make it as easy as possible to get started.

PICO-8 Fantasy Console license included!

PICO-8 is a fantasy console for creating, sharing, and playing small games and other computer programs. It feels like a regular console, but runs on Windows/Mac/Linux. When you turn it on, the machine greets you with a command line, a set of tools for creating cartridges, and an online cartridge browser called SPLORE:

There are already thousands of games, demos, experiments, and creations available to try out—it's the perfect way to get started with game development!

Picade kit information

The Picade comes as a kit and takes about two to three hours to assemble, requiring only some standard screwdrivers.

All you need is a Raspberry Pi, USB-C power supply, and micro SD card. If you are using a Pi 5, we recommend using an active cooler as well.

The assembly instructions are available online, and the dimensions are approximately 310 x 260 x 250 mm (H x W x D).

About Picade X HAT

Picade X HAT is a handy all-in-one Raspberry Pi add-on that connects to your Pi's GPIO pins and communicates with all inputs. It also controls the power supply and sound!

Software installation

For emulation, we recommend using RetroPie on your Picade. This software guide shows you how to install it on your Raspberry Pi 5 and includes some other useful hints and tips for setting it up.

Notes

• Picade is designed for use with Raspberry Pi 5, but also works well with any version of Pi with a 40-pin header. You will need a USB-C power supply to power Picade X HAT. If you are using an older Pi that does not have a micro-HDMI connector, you will also need an alternative HDMI cable.
• Picade is also compatible with the popular NVMe Base for Raspberry Pi 5, which means you can even use an M.2 NVMe SSD for your epic arcade build—that's going to be really fast!
