Description

The Adafruit Motor Shield v2.3 is a versatile expansion board for Arduino, enabling control of DC motors, stepper motors, and servos with ease. Ideal for robotics and automation projects, it utilizes the efficient TB6612 MOSFET drivers, providing 1.2A per channel (3A peak) for reliable motor control.

Key Features

  • Multi-Motor Support: Control up to 4 DC motors or 2 stepper motors with individual 8-bit speed settings.
  • Servo Compatibility: Two dedicated connections for 5V 'hobby' servos, leveraging Arduino's high-resolution timers for jitter-free operation.
  • I2C Interface: Utilizes only two pins (SDA & SCL) for communication, preserving other GPIO pins for additional sensors or modules.
  • Stackable Design: Configure up to 32 shields together, managing a total of 64 DC motors or 32 stepper motors.
  • Robust Power Handling: Supports 4.5VDC to 13.5VDC motor voltage, with built-in flyback diodes and thermal shutdown protection.

Revision History

  • March 7, 2024: Updated design to disconnect A4 and A5 pins, ensuring only SDA/SCL pins are used for I2C communication. Changed default logic voltage to IOREF instead of 5V, enhancing compatibility with 3.3V Arduino boards. Collaborated with Adafruit Pinguin for improved and legible silkscreen design.
  • March 21, 2014: Began shipping motor shields with pre-soldered terminal blocks and power jumper, reducing assembly time. Users still need to solder the shield headers or stacking headers as required.

The Adafruit Motor Shield v2.3 offers a reliable and efficient solution for motor control in Arduino projects, with thoughtful design revisions enhancing usability and compatibility.
